If you are placed in a position of having to defend yourself and your life is not in immediate danger, make sure your response is in proportion to the offense. If a guy pinches you on the bottom and you turn around and stick a fork in his eye you will be charged with assault and you will go to jail. Good luck getting a job in this economy with a prison record! If you are sued for civil damages you could be faced with penalties that will ruin your finances as well.

If you have a friend who is caught in the web of an abuser and you want to help her escape you may be wondering what to do. Unless you have been in an abusive relationship yourself, it can be hard to understand what she is going through. At times her actions may seem to make no sense and you could find this frustrating. You will probably feel helpless to make a difference, but there are steps you can take to have a positive impact on your friend’s life situation.

B.J. Thomas may sing "Even the bad love is better than no love, and any
kind of love is better than no love at all" but I don't believe him and
neither should you. Millions of women are stuck in abusive
relationships from which they cannot extricate themselves. We don't
seek out bad apples, but in our eagerness to find any love at all
sometimes we overlook the early warning signs.

Weapons - Yes or No? |

In the great weapons debate you have probably heard the following piece of advice:
"You shouldn’t carry a gun/knife/pepper spray. The bad guy will just take it away and use it against you!"
In class I like to give a quick demonstration to dispatch this
paternalistic notion. I ask one of my advanced belts to throw a kick at
me. I grab his leg in midair, give it a good twist, and use it as
leverage to dump him on the ground. Then I tell my students "So, maybe
he should think about amputating that leg. Someone might use it against
him." |

Don’t go out at night; Don’t go anywhere alone; Don’t use public transportation; Don’t follow a routine; Don’t hike: Don’t exercise in public; Don’t work a late shift; Don’t wear a specific article of clothing or a particular accessory, etc.
