Batman, Spiderman, Superman and Wonder Woman do not lurk in dark alleys, behind bushes or underneath your vehicles. They will not fall from the skies and swoop down on evil doers. They will not save you if you’re in trouble. The police or a helpful hotline is only a phone call away, but what if you need help now? What if you’re alone in a parking garage at night? What if you’re walking home down a dark sidewalk on an unbelievable dark night? What’s that noise behind you? Whose breath is making your hair stand on end? Are you going to stand around and wait for the police? Are you wishing Superman really could swoop down and take you to safety?

None of that is going to happen. Be realistic. You’re alone, and, as sad as that sounds, this is the situation you are in. There is no way out. How are you going to protect yourself? No one expects you to train for years just for this situation. You don’t have to be a 4th Degree Black Belt in martial arts. You don’t even have to carry a gun to stay safe. Being alert and aware of your surroundings is enough to keep you safe, or, at the very least, to prepare you for the attacker waiting just around the corner.

Some of the most dangerous places to be alone are parking garages, parking lots, alleys, school campuses, dark sidewalks and open lots (grass or blacktop). How do you stay safe? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Walk under lamp lights (your attacker may be able to see you, but so will everybody else nearby).
  • Stay on the sidewalks. Don’t take shortcuts through alleys, parking lots or open areas, like fields or yards.
  • When on campuses or in a town, stay close to buildings or walk through buildings whenever possible. If you’re close to a door, you can dart in to keep yourself safe.
  • Keep your cell phone in hand. If you get scared, you can call for a cab or call someone you know and trust to come and get you.
  • If you’re on your way to your car, keep your keys in your hand and ready to unlock your door. If you have keyless entry, I suggest not using it. Wait until you are at your car until unlocking it to get in. Anything else, too soon, and it may be too late to save your car or yourself.
  • Don’t wait outside your car waiting for it to warm up. Don’t bother scraping your windows or mirrors right away. It is safe to turn on the defroster and wait inside with the doors locked.
  • Lock your doors directly after getting in your car.

Be aware of your surroundings. Be alert at all times, especially when you’re alone. In a dangerous place with the only hope for protection being yourself, it is your responsibility to stay safe. Millions are attacked each and every day because of carelessness. If you don’t want to be the next victim of carjacking, mugging or abuse, take some precautions.
