With all the different styles of martial arts, self defense seminars, pepper sprays, stun guns, etc... The idea of practical self defense becomes a bit overwhelming. Don't dare ask what the best method is, what the best martial art style is, or which products are best, and expect a straightforward response. This topic always sparks a debate among "experts".

As I stated in my last post, assertiveness is an essential social skill. It is one that I learned the hard way. Nothing cheers the dark and crusty heart of the office predator like the certainty that he can do pretty much anything he wants to you and you will not speak up for yourself. Even worse than the initial humiliation you endure is the realization that, when you do speak up, nothing will be done to stop the offender’s behavior.
That was my experience at my first workplace (I eventually quit) and it made me realize that any response to future harassment would have to come directly from me.

When we were children our parents warned us about "Stranger Danger". They instructed us not to go anywhere with people we didn’t know, not to talk to them, and not to let them touch us. We weren’t expected to be polite about it either, just to run screaming.
So what changed? Now we are all grown up and it is considered "inappropriate" for us to kick up a fuss about anything. If a stranger asks us where we live, we are expected to hem and haw and try not to be rude. At family reunions we wouldn’t dream of refusing that too long hug from a creepy relative. We use phrases like "I’m sorry." or "I’m afraid not." or "No, thanks." when asked out on dates by a pushy coworker.

Carrying a self-defense product such as a stun gun or pepper spray is a choice that many women make these days. Kudos to them for taking that initiative! Several women who I have talked to recently have expressed that they do not want to carry any form of self defense product, simply due to the fact that they feel it could easily be taken away and used against them in a situation. That is a very valid point of view. Many self defense experts may argue that it's better to have something than nothing. That is another valid point of view. So which is right? They both are.

Afraid of Knives |

Steak knives, butcher knives, pocket knives and even plastic knives. I feared every one of them. Serrated edges or smooth, each knife looked menacing and dangerous in my eyes.
At only four-years-old, I had seen too many dangerous knives to count in the hands of too many dangerous people. To this day, I fear them in the hands of anyone, even people I trust with my life.
